Confirmed Silver Dapple QH's

Bay silver has been confirmed (UC Davis red factor test) in the mare named Miss Bar U Badlands (she is registered as sorrel) and her grandsire Bar U Champ Binder. He is 21 now but still going strong. Both are in Canada. You can see the mare here: http://www.diamondnqh.com/missbarubadlands.htm and http://www.diamondnqh.com/. (Webmaster Notes: URLs changed June 30, 2004 due to update from site owner.)

The color has so far traced back to Bow Champ, who sired at least one bay out of a chestnut mare, proving he could not be a chestnut as registered but must be a mislabeled silver dapple.

It is in the process of being tracked from there, but the most likely path would be through Miss Dixie to an "unknown mare".

The Alter Real

The Alter Real is a Lusitano bloodline, not a separate breed, which means that in the US, they're technically Andalusians.

Defining "Warmblood"

This article is excellent at explaining the ways warmbloods are bred for folks who are used to an A X A = A breeding. www.americanwarmblood.org/introduction/whatis.htm

The Blagdon Cob

According to this site, www.irishcobireland.com/breed.htm, Blagdon refers to "another colour favored although not common" which is "any solid colour with white splashed under the belly." So it looks like "Blagdon" is a word for a moderately marked sabino. Below is a link to an example.

Highland Naming

Although it's not an absolute requirement, it is usual for Highlands to be called 'So-and-so Of Somewhere', 'Somewhere' being the name of the stud where they were bred. (Ex: the real Highland stallion Donald Of Altnacruish) There are exceptions, such as where the stud name is used as a prefix - Turin Hill Angus Iaian- but it is uncommon for a Highland to have only a single name.

Some Icelandic Name Ideas

Apalgrá - "grey with dapples"
Apla - "grey mare with dapples"
Grábakur- "grey back" (M)
Grákolla - "grey mare" (F)
Gráman- "grey mane" (horse with grey mane) (M)
Grána - "Grey one" (F)
Gráni - "Grey one" (M)
Gráfeldur - "With grey fur" (M)
Grár - "Grey" (M)
Grási - grey horse, nickname for Gráskjóni (M)
Gráskjóni - greypinto (M)
Grásteinn - "grey rock" (M)

The Colorful Knabstrupper

The Knabstrupper is first and foremost a colour breed. As such, and because the Knabstrupper gene pool is so small, cross-breeding has always been allowed.

However, since colour is such an important characteristic of the breed, a crossbred Knabstrupper will almost always be bred back to another coloured Knabstrupper.

Horses of all colours and patterns ranging from solid to few-spotted are registerable, but leopard is the most desirable. Unacceptable out-crosses include greys and any horse with pinto, gaited, or draught horse characteristics.

Today's Knabstrupper ranges quite a bit in size and type but are usually categorized in 3 main groups:

Modern or Sport type: Generally tend to look like spotted WB's. Usually have quite a bit of out-cross blood, commonly tracing to Danish WB's, Oldenburgers, Trakehners, TB's, Shagya Arabs, and more.

Baroque type: Often said to be the original Knabstrupper. Tends to look a bit like a spotted Lipizzaner. Shorter and rounder than the Modern/Sport type Knabstrupper, often with a convex profile. Out-crossing is usually kept to a minimum, but when out-crossed, Frederiksborg, Andalusian, and Lipizzaner blood has been used.

Pony type: Range from miniature/British Shetland-type to Riding/Sport Pony type. Common out-crosses include British Spotted Ponies and Shetlands for the former, New Forest, Connemara, Welsh, and various Nationalities of Riding/Sport Ponies for the latter.

Here is a wonderful article regarding Knabstruppers including pictures:

Arab Name Pronunciation

Here are just a few of those Arab names that can often twist a tongue in knots.

*Fadl = FAY-dl (rhymes with dreidel)

Fay-El-Dine = Fay-el-DEEN

Fa-Serr = fay-SAIR or FAY-sehr

Hallany Mistanny = h'LAWNY MIST-un-knee or Ha (short a)-LAN-ee Mis-TAN-ee

*Nasr = nazzer

Mesaoud = Mez-OWD

Skowronek = SKRAWN-eck

Witez II = vee-TESH the second

Witraz = vee-TRAHSH

Negatiw = negative

Wiking = Viking

Bask = bohsk (though some pronounce it like the first syllable of "basket" too)

Aramus = ah-RAH-moose

Sakr = rhymes with "soccer"

Muscat = moose-KAHT (or rhyming with "musket")

Priboj = PREE-boy

Salon = sah-LONE (although you'll hear it pronounced like the English word: SAH-lon)

Skowronek = scuh-RAWN-eck (probably should be "Skov-ron-YEK" in Polish)

El Paso is pronounced just like the Texas city, because that's where the Poles got the name. Dr. LaCroix told people that it was plain ole El Paso in "Tex-speak" (in other words, not the correct Spanish pronunciation). In fact, his barn name was "Tex."

Among Slew's Last Foal Crop…

WinStar Farm near Versailles, KY, announced January 21st that two Seattle Slew Fillies were foaled.

A filly by Slew out of Plaintiff by Seeking The Gold was foaled January 9th and a second filly by Slew out of Pleasant Temper by Storm Cat was foaled January 15th. Both were described as excellent healthy foals.

Standardbred: Trotter vs. Pacer

Cross-gait breeding in Standardbreds was quite common up until the 1970s, but since then trotters are only bred to trotters and pacers only to pacers, with a very few exceptions. Breeding across gaits generally gets you a horse that can't race successfully at either one.

Sometimes a trotter can make it as a pacer with some training but it isn't common. The gaits are inherited.

In racing, a pacer's mark will look something like p2, 1:58.3f

A trotter's mark will not have the 'p'. The way you read it is.

p = pacer, trotter will have no letter in front.

2 = the age at which the mark was taken

1:58.3 = (1 minute, 58 & 3/5 seconds) the horse's fastest WINNING time. In order for the time to count as a life-mark the horse has to have won. A horse could come in 2nd or 3rd in a faster time, but wouldn't be able to claim the mark.

f = the size track the mark was taken on. h = 1/2 mile, f = 5/8 mile, no letter means the mark was taken on a 1 mile track.

A tt or T in front of the time means the mark was taken in a time trial.

A Q in front of the time means the mark was taken in a qualifying race (non-betting).
