The Yellow Wolf Name Game
Do a name search for a QH named Yellow Wolf and you will find there are 10 unregistered QH's named Yellow Wolf. Six of those trace back the original Yellow Wolf (Old Joe Bailey x Old Mary). The Original Yellow wolf was foaled in 1912 and died in 1935. His full brother, Yellow Bear was foaled in 1913. Then there are a few Yellow Jacket horses that trace back to Yellow Wolf mares or sons of the Original Yellow Wolf. The Waggoner Ranch owned most of theses Yellow Wolf bred horses. Here is what the Waggoner Ranch owned and bred:

-Yellow Wolf (1912) THE ORIGINAL.
-Yellow Bear (1913).
-Yellow Boy sired by Chocolate by Yellow Wolf (1912) out of a Waggoner mare by Yellow Wolf (1912).
-Burnett Yellow Boy (1920) sired by Yellow Jacket out of Old Mary, half brother to Yellow Bear and Yellow Wolf.
-Yellow Fever by Yellow Wolf (1912) out of a Waggoner mare.
-Yellow Jacket 1908-1934. Owned by the Waggoner's from 1916-1924. He is the original Yellow Jacket as far as QH are concerned.
-Yellow Jacket by Yellow Jacket (1908) out of a Waggoner mare by Yellow Wolf (1912).
-East's Yellow Jacket by Yellow Jacket (1908) out of a Waggoner mare.
-Beetch's Yellow Jacket by Yellow Jacket (1908) out of a Waggoner mare.
-Adair's Yellow Wolf by Yellow Wolf (1912) out of a Waggoner mare.
-Brown's Yellow Wolf (no relation to Yellow Wolf -1912) but was owned and used by the Waggoner's. His breeding is unknown but said to be by Pid Hart by Shelby by Tom Driver. He was a seal brown colt and was a match racer, his name comes from the name of the Indian chief who once owned him.
-Burnett's Yellow Wolf by Yellow Wolf (1912) out of a Waggoner mare.
-Guthrie's Yellow Wolf by Yellow Wolf (1912) out of a Waggoner mare.
-Reynold's Yellow Wolf by Yellow Wolf (1912) out of a Waggoner mare.
-Young Yellow Wolf by Yellow Wolf (1912) out of a Waggoner mare.

Now these are just the horses owned and bred by the Waggoner Estates and most anything off the Waggoner Ranch will go back to Yellow Wolf.

Then there is:
-Moorhouse's Yellow Wolf (1939) by Humdinger out of Blasingame roan mare by Blackburn who is sired by Yellow Jacket (1908)(Waggoner's)
-Moorhouse's Yellow Jacket (1945) by King George out of JA mare by Yellow Boy P-18, 2nd dam a JA mare
-Yellow Boy P-18 is by Yellow Jacket (1908)
The JA ranch had Yellow Boy P-18 and other Waggoner/Yellow Jacket/Yellow Wolf breeding too.

*Note Moorhouse is not a typo. There is no 'e' there.

National Show Horse Requirements
The National Show Horse (NSH) is a registry formed for the Arabian x Saddlebred cross.

An NSH must be a minimum of 25% Arabian blood. There's no maximum amount of Arabian blood but it obviously must be less than 100%. The balance of the blood is Saddlebred. 15/16th Arabian NSH's have been bred!

Stallions must be nominated (by payment of a hefty fee) and can be purebred Arabian, purebred ASB or NSH. Mares must be purebred Arabian, purebred ASB or registered NSH and are not nominated.

The possible combinations are:
-Nominated Arabian stallion x ASB mare
-Nominated Arabian stallion x NSH mare
-Nominated ASB stallion x purebred Arabian mare
-Nominated ASB stallion x NSH mare, so long as the resulting offspring is at least 25% Arab
-Nominated NSH stallion x purebred Arabian mare
-Nominated NSH stallion x ASB mare, so long as the resulting offspring is at least 25% Arab
-Nominated NSH stallion x NSH mare, so long as the resulting offspring is at least 25% Arab

Over 96% of NSH are also registered in the IAHA Half-Arabian Registry, which means that they have a purebred Arabian parent.

NSH can be any color an Arabian or ASB can be and palominos and pintos are very popular.

And now to make things a little more confusing: when the NSH registry was first formed in 1982, it was possible to register any registered Half-Arabian as an NSH that first year. Very few (if any) of the non-Saddlebred crosses have bred on in the NSH registry because of the NSH emphasis on action classes (until recently that was the only type of classes in NSH shows). If the horse couldn't 'wave a leg' with the part-ASBs, it was hard to justify the (also hefty) registration fee. However (and the point of this digression): because of this brief "open registration" period, you could make a case for NSH of even more colors, such as true roan and frame overo. But you'd have to go back and pick up the color in 1982 but it can conceivably be done.

To Greener Pastures
Banshee Breeze, TB mare, d 4.14.01
Banshee Breeze, who retired last year with an 10-5-2 record in 18 starts, and $2,784,798 in earnings, was euthanized after having complications from the pregnancy (torsion of the uterus). They tried to deliver her Storm Cat foal by cesarean, but it was premature and died.

Dahlia, TB mare, d. 4.14.01. She was age 31. She was a champion race mare was pretty much unbeatable in her day and also an incredible broodmare.

Multi-World Grand Champion Ch. Skywatch (foaled in 1977) was put down 5.20.01 This incredible stallion was proclaimed by many to be the greatest Five Gaited horse of all time and was owned by Michelle MacFarlane/Scripps Miramar who also owned the great spotted Chubasco.

Standardbred Cam Fella was euthanized at Kentucky Horse Park on 5.9.01.

Approved Dutch Warmblood stallion Aram was euthanized 6.10.01 due to a broken leg. Check out www.majesticgaits.com for Aram info.

Glitter Please vs. The Jockey Club
Four Glitter Please foals have had their papers pulled by the Jockey Club, including Goldmaker and Dream in Gold because they were conceived via AI. The case is before the courts right now. The Jockey Club does NOT allow AI!

It was originally thought that his first foal crop was in 1998 but a previous owner has stated that he had a small crop of foals when he was 4yo (1986), including a chestnut and a buckskin. His 'official' foal crop is listed as1998. For more Glitter Please info, check out www.goldhopefarm.com/Glitter_Please.htm

Statesman and First Secretary
Sahaptin Farms Appaloosa mare Leola gave birth to the first 'test' foal of Secretariat, First Secretary, on 11.15.74 in Winona, MN. Although an Appaloosa, he looked like Secretariat in conformation. He died around 1993 or so. He was registered with the ApHC and ApHCC. View his pedigree and photo at http://members.tripod.com/~barnlot/firstsecretary.html.

Secretariat's oldest living son is the stallion Statesman. He was also a test foal, out of a draft mare used as a nurse mare at Claiborne Farm. Statesman has had an amazing career: sire of American Performance Horses, dressage horse, school horse, trail horse, jumper, etc… You will find an article about him in the December 2000 issue of The Blood Horse magazine.

If you're wondering about the reason for using test mares, here's the answer. Secretariat had been syndicated and the tests were mainly to satisfy the syndicate's shareholders and insurance company that he was actually fertile. He was tested on three mares. The first one came up empty and everyone panicked until the other two came up in foal - they were all afraid they had this multi-million dollar "dud stud" on their hands. You don't have to do a sperm test to get fertility insurance though. (As a result: Cigar.) This is because most stallions ARE fertile and the insurance company makes more money on all the premiums of the fertile horses than the rare claims on the infertile ones.

A Thoroughbred stallion sometimes has to be trained to do his "duty". If you're conditioned for years that you are not to even think about mares as breeding partners, you can end up not knowing what to do when the time comes.

The other factor is that if Thoroughbred mares were used, the stallions first official crop would all be FALL-born babies and since all TBs age every year on Jan 1st, regardless of actual birth date, you'd have 2-4 mo. old foals being considered yearlings! That's not good for racing purposes.

Lure also has fertility problems and the original syndicate filed a fertility claim on him and the insurance company then owned him. They auctioned him off and Coolmore bought him. He went to Ireland first but now is back in the states at Coolmore's Kentucky division - Ashford Stud. Ashford acknowledges the problem and has established a policy for breeding to Lure similar to that of El Gran Senor - if the mare is not in foal after two cycles, the owner can either choose a different Ashford stallion or go elsewhere. Lure's fee for 2001 is $15000 according to Ashford's information packet. Many of the Northern Dancer line horses have fertility problems.

Arctic White
Two year old. Arctic White, one of only 12 registered all-white (or extreme sabino) Thoroughbreds, put in his first official workout on Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Emerald Downs in Seattle, WA. The 2-year-old colt breezed 2 furlongs in :26 under apprentice jockey Jennifer Whitaker.

Trainer Howard Belvoir was encouraged with "Casper's" performance, noting that he will stand at stud following his racing career.

Bred in Oregon, Arctic White is by Airdrie Apache out of Tropicanna Anna. He is owned by Darlene Knight, who also owns his sire and dam. Knight has so far bred three all-white horses. She sold the all-white Silver Mystique as a weanling for $85,000 at the 1999 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November select sale. On January 31 of this year, one of Knight's broodmares, The Ranch, foaled a white filly.

Other Racing White Thoroughbreds
Patchen Beauty was a winner. Her dam was unraced. Her grand-dam won 2 of 7 starts. Her great-grand-dam, White Beauty, won 2 of 16. White Beauty's best foal on the track was Vennie Redberry, who won 7 of 69 and over $100,000 and was stakes-placed at 2. A lot of the descendants ended up being bought by Paint breeders, since they were 'spotted'.

Clarence Stewart (1977, white) won 1 race and his white son White Flight also won once but was a gelding.

Grand Espoir Blanc, who won 3 of 16 but he was also a gelding.

Then there's Not Quite White (who is registered as "white" in spite of her name). She never raced but is pretty well bred. Her loud sabino son Airdrie Apache was also unraced but has good bloodlines, and he has sired 3 white foals already.

There are a number of all-white sabinos from the Puchilingui line but they aren't doing much on the track.

Getting Sabino White
Just how do you get a sabino so extreme it's completely white? Well, your best bet may be using someone who has proven that he/she can throw one. Examples are:

You can get a sabino white from a sabino 'white' and a sabino 'solid'. For example: the Arab stallion R Khasper's white filly. For R Khasper's website, go to: www.rlfarm.com.

You can get a sabino white from two sabino solids. Example: the Arab stallion R Khasper

You can get a sabino white from a sabino pinto and a solid. Example: Airdrie Apache's two white offspring.

If you use tobiano, it could express itself as tovero and have solid colored ears.
