Blast From The Past
submitted by Leslie Kathman

The following came from the Arabian Registry and Breeder's Society (ARaBS) "Stud Book Volume 1". For those that were not involved in the hobby during that time, ARaBS was a very popular club for showing model Arabians during the early 1980s. In 1985, one of the members (Margie Johnson) published the Stud Book, which was actually a compliation of the members' Arabian sire and dam lists. Since some IPABRA members might have horses that trace back to these show models of yesteryear, I thought these excerpts might be interesting....

"Elizabeth Bouras, Amarna Arabian Stud (then of Narbeth, PA)...
Amarna Arabian Stud has specialized in breeding Straight Egyptian Arabians since 1972 and have bred many top Arabian showhorses. We offer out best stock at public stud. Please send the following information on the foal - name, age, sex, color and description; dam's name, sire, dam, color, breed, owner, and a SASE. Thank you!

Winner over 30 Grand Champs, 1983 ARaBS National Grand Champ, club SLOM. Open to foals born 1967 onwards. Fee - 50c + SASE includes certificate and extended pedigree.

AMARNA EL NISR (S-313) rbl (*Amarna Ibn Halima -rbl x *Amarna Bint Zaafarana -rbl) 1967 Egyptian stallion, Saklawi Gidran strain. Dappled grey Breyer PAS r/r/h by Amarna. Multi-Grand Champ 1984 Model Horse Congress. Open to foals born 1970 onwards, fee - 50c + SASE includes certificate and extended pedigree.

*ZAGHLOUL (S-30) rbl (Gassir -real x Gharbawia -real) 1963 Egyptian stallion, Saklawi strain. Light grey Breyer PAS r/r/h by Amarna. Shown lightly, multi-champion. Open to foals born 1966 onwards, fee - 25c + SASE includes certificate and extended pedigree."

Legend: rbl - traces to real horses, SLOM - Supreme Legion Of Merit

As everyone can see, top quality sires of that time could command a much higher stud fee than most stallions today! It was not unheard of for an especially successful or well-known stallion to command a 50c or higher fee.

Unfortunately, the 1980s marked the rise of live shows and end of the importance of club showing for many hobbyists. ARaBS folded shortly after the Stud Book was published, and to my knowledge, no others were published.
