![]() KOT - by Anna-Karin Larsson of Sweden |
Kots look like an ordinary horse but have very beautiful, shining colors. They have a special gait close to the Tennessee Walking Horse's rack, but faster. They live long, about 35 terranyears, are very intelligent and with good staying powers. In body they look a little bit like a cross between an Arabian and a Spanish race, perhaps Andalusian and Lusitano, with the Spanish body and an Arabian neck or head. They are about 17-18 hands high - about 150-160 cm.
Kots can have all whole colors (no Appaloosas, pintos, or stripes) but their colors are a bit different than the colors of the terran horses. Grey horses can be Silverwhite - white with some silvercolored hair, from silver on the lower parts of the legs to almost wholly silvercolored, or Goldenwhite - with some goldencolored hair instead. But the golden hair is never in dots but are evenly spread. Goldenwhite kots normally have goldish or reddish manes and tails, but can have white as well. Nightwhite kots are completely white - no golden nor silver hair, but they have black manes and tails, and sometimes black lower legs as well. Brown kots can have any brown color at all with different amounts of golden hair, and usually with black manes and tails. Chestnut kots can also have any brown color at all with different amounts of golden hair, but their manes and tails can differ from almost white, cream-colored to a nearly black-brown color. Normally the mane and tail of the horse are lighter than the color of the horse's body, only seldom darker. All chestnuts have more or less of the golden hairs. There are two sorts of Black kots - the Goldflushblack - those are black with golden hairs and then there are the Nightblack - that are goldflushblacks with white manes and tails. The black - and especially the Nightblacks - are incredibly rare and precious and sometimes get what are called Golden Marks - like sock and such that are goldencolored instead of white. These horses are said to belong to the gods of Portlla and are never exported. Other horses than the black may have white marks, but seldom very large ones. Sometimes they have golden or silvercolored hair in the marks, depending on their color. Apart from the Nightblack and the blacks with the Golden Marks, over 500 kots are exported from Portlla to the rest of the world, where they are highly appreciated for their incredible beauty, speed, and intelligence.

In the Four Countries of Portlla the fast Thaners are bred. As their cousins the Kotses Thaners are also a color-race. They are striped in gold and brown. They are often disputed whether they are goldcolored with brown stripes or brown with golden stripes. Because of that, the breed has been divided in so called Golden Thans and so called Brown Thans, where the Golden mostly are golden colored and Brown mostly are brown. Among them the Brown Thaners mostly get the desirable Golden Manes, where their manes and tails and golden, while the Golden Thans mostly get black manes and tails, although there are Golden Thans with Golden Manes (which are the most desirable of all) as well as Brown Thans with black manes and tails.
The Thans look like a sturdy race-Thoroughbred, with long legs, powerful hindquarters and a straight profile. They are bred for speed and are strong runners. There are competitions for all distances in the Four Countries. In size the Thans are about 18-19 hands high, or 158-162 cm. Only a few as 100 Thans have ever been exported outside of Portlla. The best breeder of Thans has always been the Duke of Iron of Maard.
Legend has it that the Thans are descended from a herd of golden horses belonging to the mythical Tigress and the men who were called her Tigers. Theories have been made that these so called Golden Horses were in fact Kots, but those theories have not been confirmed. Three Golden Horses were stolen from the Tigress and when crossed with Khalean Mountainhorses gave the striped Thans.
